Our most asked questions

Most learners need approximately 45 hours of professional lessons plus about 22 hours of private supervised practice before reaching test-ready standard.

You do not need your provisional license to BOOK your first lesson, but you MUST provide your license information to DO your first lesson.

In the UK, since 4 June 2018, learner drivers can drive on motorways only if:

  • You’re accompanied by an approved driving instructor (ADI) — not just any fully licensed driver.

    – You’re in a car fitted with dual controls — so the instructor can take over if needed.

    – You’re in a car (not a motorbike) — learner motorcyclists are not allowed on motorways.

You can drive your own car outside of lessons, but you must meet all of the following legal requirements:

1. Be supervised by a qualified driver

  • They must be at least 21 years old
  • They must have held a full driving licence for the vehicle type for at least 3 years
  • The licence must be from the UK, EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, or Switzerland

2. Display L plates (or D plates in Wales)

  • They must be clearly visible on the front and back of the car

3. Have learner driver insurance

  • Either a specific learner driver policy for your own car
  • Or be covered under someone else’s insurance (if you’re driving their car)

4. Follow learner restrictions

  • No driving on motorways unless accompanied by an approved driving instructor (ADI) in a dual-controlled car

Yes — you must pass your driving theory test before you can book your practical driving test.

When you pass the theory test, you’ll get a certificate with a number on it. You’ll need that number to book your practical test, and the booking system won’t let you continue without it.

The theory test pass is valid for 2 years, so you need to pass your practical test within that time — otherwise, you’ll have to retake the theory test before booking again.

Download a theory test app for learning & revision, or purchase official DVSA highway code and revision guides. Give yourself approximately three weeks or more to prepare.

Yes – If you need to cancel or reschedule, please let us know at least 48 hours before your lesson so we can offer the spot to someone else. Cancellations made within 48 hours (including no-shows) will be charged the full lesson fee.

No – lessons can start & finish anywhere within the Colchester area, as long as sufficient notice is given as it can impact diary planning and being on time for the next lesson.
